thank you for supporting
the RMIT Capitol Theatre Appeal
The Capitol Theatre is a Melbourne icon and an important part of our city’s artistic and cultural history.
Thanks to your generous support, the Capitol Theatre will reopen its doors in this year, reclaiming its place as a Melbourne heritage icon. Enjoying a new lease on life, the Capitol will once again be ahead of its time as a cutting-edge performance and cinema complex for RMIT students, staff and the community.
In May 2019, a partnership between RMIT and ACMI will see the Capitol debut as the new home of ACMI’s extensive range of festivals and events as they undergo their refurbishment. Together, we will host more than 500 events at the Capitol and expect over 100,000 visitors at our beautiful theatre. ACMI and RMIT will also collaborate to develop innovative teaching and research opportunities for students and staff.

We want to revitalise the Capitol and open it up to students, industry and the community. The new Capitol will be a thriving centre of education, research and innovation. More than 1000 students across 10 disciplines will be able to gain hands on experience and exposure to industry best practice.

The Capitol can once again become a hotbed of creativity – with ideas sparking off each other – and become an inspirational space hosting world premieres, festival screenings and special events.

I really encourage others to get behind the vision of bringing back this beautiful icon. Not only for its former glory but its future potential to really engage Melbournians and people from around the world with this jewel that’s in the heart of our city.

The refurbished Capitol Theatre will make an important and unique contribution to Melbourne screen culture, and to the city of Melbourne as a global arts and culture destination.

“Yes! Another mighty and inspirational dimension from RMIT. Village Roadshow’s partnership at The Capitol was a turning point in our exhibition business. “Capitol Reloaded” – I’d like to see that!”
John Kirby
“What will happen here, is the recreation of something quite extraordinary, a magnificent building, which at the same time will become a wonderful learning resource for the students at RMIT, and for people who live and work in Melbourne.”
