Angelica Mimi Germano – Post #01

I have commenced my internship at Carringbush Adult Education. I am completing my placement at 415 Church St, Richmond. This internship consists of both a face to face and online component. Mondays are the face to face component and the duration is 9am to 4:00pm. Wednesdays I can complete the work at home and send it to my supervisor. This benefits me greatly as it allows me to juggle my second volunteer position at Amnesty International for my research project. My role at Carringbush Adult Education consists of updating their current service directory and manualfor Richmond estate residents. My role is to also gather contact information, and a description of the events and programs on offer from service providers in the Yarra community, and obtain informed consent from these organisations as Carringbush is aiming to put together a quarterly calendar of programs for Richmond estate residents. My role is to also gather information on how to design, and maintain a low literacy, non-profit app. At Amnesty International my role consists of writing for their Am-unity magazine for 30 days. The role is very flexible in which I can work on the article in my own time. I have chosen to write my article demonstrating the relationship between poverty and stereotypes. Specifically I will address how these stereotypes contribute to the cycle of poverty and dehumanisation of these marginalised groups. My motivation for undertaking these two positions is due to my passion for eradicating homelessness. Whilst both positions may seem to differ as Carringbush Adult Education offers English classes for migrants, they also contribute to the reduction of poverty. Carringbush assists migrants obtain public housing, and also employment opportunities with Carringbush themselves in order to gain that experience and reference as the job market is competitive. Amnesty International allows me the freedom to write about my passion and also draw attention to the complexities associated with the cycle of poverty, and what we can do as a society to address this issue.
