Amjad Ali Nangialy – Post #01

In my role as education adviser, I work very closely with asylum seekers who have a good level of English and would like to study at TAFE level.  State government has signed a memorandum of understating with Asylum Seekers Resource Centre and Red Cross to allow asylum seeker to study at TAFE unto level of certificate 4 and will be charged at concession rate. They can do only two certificate in one year and it has to be upwards.

It has been a great opportunity for a number of people because they can obtain formal education and also have a recognised education in Australia that could lead to employment n future. The rage of the students vary from students with no education and basic education to students with high education overseas and good English and also some student who have finished their school in Australia but as they are on bridging visa they are not allowed to study at university level.

I have couple of appointments with the potential students before I refer them to their preferred TAFE and course. In my initial meeting I try to know them and have some understating about their previous education and experience. I also assess their English level by speaking and asking them to read some information about the course.

In my follow up appointments we discuss about the different study options available, charges and potential employment pathways after completing the course.  I provide them as much information as possible but in order to be fully sure I registered them for information session with the relevant TAFE and encourage them to ask any questions they have in mid from the course coordinator during the information session. After attending the information session if they wish to enrol in the course, we assist them with filling out the relevant forms and provide them other required documents for enrolment. We also provide them any support if they need during the course of their studies.
