As I have decided to undertake a research project, I soon begin the task of trolling through mountains of research. There will be documents, proposals, reports, meeting minutes, presentations and pages and pages of website collateral. Considering I have never worked for a large private corporation, I am unsure how this process will unfold and how transparent the company will be in providing me with unbiased information. Although I have been granted use of some internal information, it is still difficult to know how much a company is willing to let you see.

To pursue my new-found interest in corporate social responsibility (CSR) and role of the private sector in philanthropy, I am working with Pearson Australia to develop a tailored CSR strategy. As a global company, they have a huge presence in terms of social impact, with their Project Literacy initiative and their relationship with Save the Children, yet Pearson Australia do little to none in terms of CSR.

I am both excited and nervous to start this report, as I feel that a targeted CSR strategy could be extremely beneficial for the company and the potential beneficiaries. Yet the fact that it doesn’t already exist off the back of the successfulness of the global CSR strategy, makes me question the feasibility of it being properly implemented and managed, especially in considering budget and resource limitations.

I believe with the appropriate evaluation of the global CSR strategy and a targeted needs assessment of the Australian business, Pearson will see the benefits of implementing a CSR strategy in Australia in the near future.

Now onto that research…
