Ceramics FAS: Ceramic Art and Architecture, Moulding and Variations

“In this course you will learn and practice building architectural form. You will explore the physical properties of different clay with various additives. Moulding skill will be introduced and enhanced (for experienced students) and apply to make objects relevant to the idea of architecture in nature and the man-made world. Relevant surface treatment technique will be introduced. Conceptual and aesthetic concerns will be addressed to assist you to develop an individual approach to object forming relates to sculptural and architectural forms.

Painting FAS: Abstract Practices

In this course you will engage with a wide range of concepts and material investigation into abstraction and non-objective art practices, leading to an individualised studio practice. You will produce experimental research work that emphasise the importance of materiality, scale, colour, composition, pattern, structure, surface, matter, Zen, calligraphy, gesture, play and chance associations. The rich legacy of Western Modernist abstraction and Contemporary abstraction will be at the core of your studio work. You will experience a variety of strategies to generate new ideas, concepts, techniques and material process in a variety of media. You may experience the use of abstraction through, painting, print and digital technologies, drawing, collage, frottage, photography, the object, installation and other media. The use of found objects, photography, nature, urban environments, signs and symbols, ephemeral works, response to sound and light may be stimuli for your production of work. You will develop a draft studio work proposal that is directed to your own individual studio work. You will experience student presentations, visual lectures, individual and group tutorials and feedback and field trips to exhibitions in a supportive stimulating environment.

Painting FAS: Painting Diversification

“In this course you will develop your own unique studio practice in relationship to the expanded field of painting that may include painting, collage, works on paper, the object and installation. You will experience new strategies for generating ideas and stimulating your imagination, that lead to the development of a flexible studio work proposal that is sustainable and research focused to your own individual ideas. Themes in contemporary art will be investigated to demonstrate how artists initiate, expand and maximise outputs through experimentation and research. Ideas may include: the body, nature, abstraction, materiality, colour, chance, series, memory, the known and the unknown. You will identify your field of practice and participate in an Exhibition Project where you will curate, exhibit, critique and document your work in a collaborative group exhibition. This will provide valuable information and experience in exhibition practice, gallery installation strategies and professional practice that will prepare you for a career in the arts industry.
You will experience individual tutorials, peer-to-peer discussion and group feedback sessions, field trips to local museums, demonstrations and health and safety; experiences that will enrich and sustain your continued development as artists in a supportive and stimulating environment.”

“In this course offering you will be introduced to local and global ideas and practices examining modes of representation and ways of seeing. Linking theory to practice this course will develop your formal and conceptual understanding of representation and your knowledge and application of these fundamental ideas.
The objectives of this course offering are to understand how knowledge and making are linked through ways of seeing and thinking, to investigate pictorial languages and conceptual approaches to communication through the making of creative works, and, to relate critical concepts, texts and practices to your studio production. The course looks particularly at the idea of human presence in photography specifically to do with; picturing people, voluntary and involuntary portraiture, series and sequencing, (Re)presenting absence and a range of alternative representational strategies in photography.”

Sculpture FAS: Sculpture, Nature and the Body

“This subject develops knowledge and facility in the study of the human body and aspects of the natural world. It provides practical, technical, interpretive and theoretical methods for studying and translating the human body, flora and fauna, geological structures and a range of other natural forms and phenomena. It will employ standard modelling and plaster casting processes and techniques, and a range of other 3D transformation techniques.
Over the course of the semester a series of practical studio classes, theoretical discussions and projects will address both contemporary and historical perspectives in sculpture as it relates to the body and nature.”

Ceramics Workshop: Clay as Vibrant Matter – Porcelain and Colour Clay

Clay is an irresistible material with endless making potential. This subject is a playful approach to clay with a pursuit on details . In this course, you will explore how porcelain and different colouring agents can be merged to create small aesthetic objects for use and appreciation. Techniques such as lamination, inlaid, marbling will be introduced that can be transformed to create multiple possibilities.

Painting Workshop: Contemporary Figuration

In this studio-based workshop you will investigate a diverse range of conceptual and technical aspects of figuration. Through a series of projects, you will experience the human image and the broader framework of the real, the landscape, the natural world and the body. Using strategies such as observation, models, reproductions and film as source material you will develop an individual approach to contemporary figuration. You will investigate ideas of narrative, distortion, movement, emptiness, and trace as form and content, in a way that explores the unique place of figuration in contemporary art. This workshop will enable you to explore the relationship between painting, drawing, photography, social media and film. Research and experimentation are a core strategy of the workshop leading to a group of individual, resolved artworks. Visual lectures, individual and group tutorials, and demonstrations complement this workshop.

“Colour is an important deliberation when making art. In this course you will focus on colour in various objective and subjective guises – considering it; as idea, as culture, as material, as expressive, as social, as political, as metaphor, as aesthetic, as intuitive, as emotion, as personal, as signifier, as technical. The course is studio based and is designed and delivered in ways, which focuses on your individual responses to colour and at the same time exposing you to a range of technical approaches with colour in painting practice. This includes; the principles of colour, colour and grisaille, tonality, limited palettes, and colour mixing. At all times experimentation is encouraged as a way to extend and develop a body of artworks in any form and material relevant to your individual interests.
The course will be delivered through flexible set projects, lectures, demonstrations, and individual studio and group tutorials.”

Photography Workshop: Analog Photography

Hong Kong Art School -2M05The course is based around a series of structured projects that engage issues related to analogue photography. It will introduce you to filmic photography, including various filmic cameras, and technical knowledge around exposures and image control, and black and white darkroom processes. You will create a range of art works and related support material to establish the means to analyse modes of practice and models of aesthetics and meaning in analogue photography. You will develop knowledge and skills in analysing, responding and discussing your own artwork and the artwork of others.

Sculpture Workshop: Traditional material in contemporary: Metal

Historically, metal has been a traditional material in sculptural practice and continues to maintain currency in contemporary practice. In this course you will develop a range of practical skills across a range of processes which are commonly used in sculpture practice. You will be introduced to particular methods and materials through specific projects, with an emphasis on the relation to your own individual concepts in art making. You will be given practical instruction and experience in the use of workshop equipment together with relevant health and safety training in the production of artworks using metal as a vibrant material in art making. The course will cover areas including; the use of hand tools in metal work, electric and spot-welding techniques, and soldering techniques with metals.
