Canvas is a little different from Blackboard, when it comes to managing groups of students. This is mostly due to a change in the language. It’s important to understand the right Canvas terminology:
- Groups – primarily used for managing group assignments.
- Sections – used to manage cohorts of students, typically based on classes, lectures, workshops or tutorial groups.

Coming Soon – Canvas Improvements
Our technical team is working with Instructure, the company behind Canvas, and the Canvas user community to improve the management of groups and sections in Canvas.
This involves exploring and implementing technologies to enable you to create and manage groups and sections within your course more easily and independently. An improved solution is in sight before the start of Semester 2, and The Wire readers will be the first in the know!
