Aviation/Aerospace Australia (A/AA) is a not-for-profit and independent association, with an overarching objective to contribute to the long-term health and sustainability of Australia’s aviation and aerospace sector. The 2021 Distinguished Leadership Award award recognises the outstanding research and educational contributions made by Professor Sabatini in the field of Aerospace Engineering and Aviation, with a focus on Cyber-Physical and Autonomous Systems for Air Transport, Defence and Space operations.
Professor Sabatini has 30 years of industrial and academic experience in Avionics, Aerial Robotics and Spaceflight Systems for civil and military applications. Currently, he serves as Chair of the Cyber-Physical & Autonomous Systems Group and Deputy Director of the Sir Lawrence Wackett Centre. Additionally, he contributes to the broader aerospace engineering and aviation professional communities as Fellow and Executive of the Institution of Engineers Australia, Chair of the IEEE Avionics Systems Panel (Aerospace & Electronic Systems Society), IEEE Distinguished Lecturer (Trusted Autonomous Aerospace Systems), Mentor for the A/AA Reaching Higher Program, Fellow of the Royal Aeronautical Society, and Fellow the Royal Institute of Navigation.
During a period of eight years at RMIT University, Professor Sabatini has led the CPAS Group in several industry and government funded research projects (Thales, Northrop Grumman, Lockheed Martin, DST Group, SmartSat CRC, etc.) and he has contributed to enhance the School of Engineering/STEM College Learning and Teaching (L&T) portfolio with several aerospace and aviation courses, such as Aircraft Systems, Systems Engineering, Avionics & Air Traffic Management Systems, Engineering Sustainability in Aviation, and Spaceflight Systems Design. He also contributed to the development of two new bachelor degree programs and two new master degree programs in the STEM College. Currently, he is listed in the top 2% most cited researchers globally in Aerospace and Aeronautics (Stanford University ranking, 2020).
