PEACOCKING is a ceramic exploration into sexuality and the reproductive systems of animals and humans. This year I focused my investigation on the courtship displays shown by certain birds-of-paradise and the seductive body language shown by humans. My research has led me to create a series of phallic, organic forms that communicate with each other through elements of body language, pairings and colour. More broadly, I am drawn to ideas of body, home, wombs and caves. My artistic enjoyment comes from sculpting forms that reflect safe spaces in nature that assist the process of reproduction. I’m inspired by forms that reflect duality and symmetry such as ovaries or genitalia. I prefer to hand-build all my forms with minimal use of tools, I want my work to be imperfect and mirror the maker’s mark.
