HERE/THERE (AND ME IN-BETWEEN)
Just like walking in an alley, looking to see what will happen, then walking into another alley to explore what can be seen, getting into yet another alley, wondering about what can be found there, and in the end, even after getting lost and hanging around, getting back on the main path, with a great deal of new knowledge, seeing new things, connecting new spaces you have never seen before, completing a new temporary order.
Dutch theorist Jeroen Lutter uses this anecdotal statement to explain the process of ‘thinking through making’—this being a creative process that allows free thinking, exploration, and experimentation as a means of knowledge production. These notions resonate with my creative process, as I am fascinated by understanding where materials can take you.
Recently, I have been interested in the role of documentation within creative practice, and the way that documenting transitions from one mode of making to another produces new and unexpected forms. I have also been interested in the potential of materials that have been collected from my immediate environment. These materials become the catalyst for new and unexpected forms.
The resulting installations produced through this mode of making become intersectional. The forms become a framework for suggesting an in-between state. In this way, the work becomes about the time between the making, rather than the creative objects that we see. The work becomes a study of temporality through a language of abstraction and assemblage, change, formations, and re-formations—where time, space, and memory combine into an aesthetics of resourcefulness, immediacy, and process.
