Leon Zhan is an artist currently working across painting and sculpture. Born in Melbourne to Chinese immigrant parents, Zhan’s highly finished pictorial practice is heavily influenced by his own diasporic experience. Negotiating the orient and the occident, his work articulates the third space created through cross-culturally hybridity, finding solace in the grey area of perpetual in-betweenness. Oscillating between digital and analogue modes of production, Zhan employs 3D rendering programs to construct his dark and enigmatic scenes. Imbued with a digital sensibility, his work converges historic and contemporary subjects, ideas and aesthetics to synthesise new meanings.
