BETWEEN PERSONAL AND THE GENDER POLITICS: THE SYMPHONY OF MATERIAL SUBSTANCES, ACTIONS, AND BODY MOVEMENTS

Through creative practices informed by ceramic processes, this practice-led research project explores gender identity within the context of contemporary Chinese society, delving into narrations, experiences, feelings, and emotions informed by a feminist framework. It is based on personal narration of family’s history of feminine labour in corn farming. This research employs contemporary studio techniques in ceramics to build sculptural forms primarily utilising porcelain while also integrating corn fragments and metals. Throughout the creative process, this project explores representation of gender identity and social hierarchies through material experimentation, body movements in making, and installation methods. The overarching goal of this research is to initiate conversations about the narrative potential inherent in materials, and how materials guide the body in actions to sync with the notion of artwork. Concurrently, these creative processes play a role in aiding my personal journey of comprehending with my gender identity.

Jing Liang is an emerging artist, currently living and working in Naarm. Her artistic practice revolves around a methodology of experimenting with materials and body movement. This approach is situated within the contexts of new materialism and socio-political considerations, with a particular emphasis on gender and cultural identity. Utilising a diverse range of materials, Liang employs a feminist critique to thoroughly examine and question patriarchal social structures. The emotional resonance of the interaction with materials and the repetition in bodily rhythm are investigated through a series of experiments in various spatial settings. These endeavours present novel avenues for delving into feminist explorations.
