THE MOAT AWARD WINNER

CACHEXIA.

A surreal exploration of the decaying body, born from the intersection of personal experience and the unsettling reality of transformation. This body of work reflects an intimate relationship with my own physical form, fusing surrealist mark-making theories and abject art to probe the boundaries between allure and decay. Each piece embodies an intuitive process, where painted imagery and material manipulation reveal their own textures and shapes.

Catherine Weng is a multidisciplinary artist practicing in Naarm/Melbourne. She is engaged in material re-imaginings of the human body, including notions of abjection, feminism and disease. Her practice is informed by the self-imposed destruction of the body and social traditions of materials. She experiments with various mediums of textiles, paint, and found objects to create surreal interpretations of the body and its psyche through forms of sculpture and installation. Her installations often investigate the duality of the grotesque and the beautiful, drawing viewers into unsettling yet captivating explorations of biological life forms.
