UNIFORM: Autobiographical reflections on the interplay between conformity, gender and neurodiverse thinking.
Uniform explores the intricate dynamics of identity, conformity, and neurodiverse thinking within the rigid structures of the schooling experience. The work examines the complexities of the coming-of-age process, focusing on the transformative physical and emotional changes that characterise this liminal phase of life. Drawing on autobiographical narratives, Uniform reflects how the intersecting pressures of gendered expectations and neurotypical standards intensified the need to conform during my adolescence. The interplay between refined representation and deliberate omissions in the work mirrors the layers of my personal history as a neurodivergent woman, highlighting the fluidity and complexity of navigating multiple identities within societal constraints.
Christina Rankin (b.2001) is an emerging artist from Wonthaggi, now working in Naarm/Melbourne. Her work is predominantly informed by lived experience and focuses on exploring memory, the transitional process of coming-of-age and her identity as a neurodivergent woman. Christina’s practice integrates refined figuration, symbolic motifs, text and gestural abstraction, each composition merging these elements to convey the specific autobiographical narratives at the core of the work.
