FOR YOUR PLEASURE.
Throughout my creative practice, I aim to challenge the traditional conventions of art and identity, often working with unconventional materials and imagery I intend to redefine the measures of fine art. For this project, I wanted to transport the audience to a fantasy world where the deepest desires have been transformed into consumable products. In our contemporary society, it is impossible to avoid the product of the capitalist industries and the effects of consumer culture, with this project I explore the limits of capitalism by creating products that would otherwise be impossible to consume. I approached this project from a humorous standpoint on the concepts, portraying the ridiculous nature of commercial industries and how they push certain beliefs especially surrounding gender, race and sexuality. Every piece of the work is referential to real marketing campaigns and slogans to create a believable brand that also comments on the absurdity of advertising tactics. Although the work is not intended to be taken seriously, I aim to provoke audiences to consider consumerism’s role in their life and how they contribute to it.
Jamexsii is a Naarm-based, multi-disciplinary artist whose practice defies the boundaries of traditional artistic and social conventions often found in their work. They utilise their process to investigate themes of gender and sexuality in relation to their personal experiences and observations. By identifying as simply Jamesxii, the artist has developed their practice as its own entity. This separate artistic identity allows the artist to explore personal expressions whilst also transforming into a range of representations. Their practice draws heavily from pop culture and iconic art moments, recontextualising the aesthetics and themes in a contemporary setting.
