Everchanging and Ephemeral: Exploration of phenomenological experiences in nature.
In my practice, I’m interested in the study of phenomenology. I’m especially drawn to expressing my experiences in natural environments. I grew up in a small town on the South Coast of NSW. I was always surrounded by bush, beaches, and animals. As a kid, I believed that nature and I could communicate and completely understood each other. I believed that the wind rustling through the trees was whispering to me. I would thank the ocean when it gave me my favourite waves to float over. I created a different version of the song so that the rain, rain, would ‘come and play’ instead of ‘go away’. I’ve always found being in nature to evoke a connectedness to both the environment and oneself.
As an artist I’m drawn to respond to these moments; often through writings, drawings, and paintings. I’m interested in how the audience can engage and interact with artworks. In this project, I’ve created a space for people to be immersed through the senses such as touch, sight, smell, and sound. Currently, I’m moving toward including digital modes of practice such as digital sculpting/rendering, video, and audio recordings alongside my other mentioned methods.
