THE BOLD AND THE BEAUTIFUL AWARD WINNER
Reframing perception.
As a proud Italian Aboriginal from the Wiradjuri and Yorta Yorta people, I enforce change in the art world by reframing the perception of Aboriginal art. My acrylic paintings are my effort to challenge stereotypes that all First Nations creatives should create dot paintings or tell spiritual stories. I utilise colour and symbolism to project my new and colourful style under the title ‘Aboriginal art’ to redirect my non-indigenous peers to see my work and other First Nations art through a new lens. The symbols of eyes are seen throughout my paintings as representations of perception and encouragement of taking the time to look and see me as a First Nations artist and what I’m truly sharing not just the preconceived visions of Aboriginal artists. Colour is a tool I use in my works as the hook into my work in an attempt to capture viewers and juxtapose the ochre and earth tones that are expected. Often we are heard but not listened to long enough to be understood.
