A TAPESTRY OF THE MENTAL UNDOING

Is an introspective exploration the way mental health challenges can give rise to maladaptive coping mechanisms, while also touching on the profound impact of intergeneration trauma through its selection of materiality. The work aims the allude to the intergenerational trauma through its intersectionality, using a combination of digital and analogue print techniques – the use of digital photography and cyanotype.

The work features five images, repeated throughout, each paired with definitions of the emotions and coping strategies tied to my experience with depression and generalized anxiety disorder. To connect these personal struggles to the concept of intergenerational trauma, I created a ‘quilted’ effect, stitching fabric tiles together and incorporating elements of my grandmother’s silk tablecloth, weaving her own suppressed struggles into the piece.
