Winner: BDS Prize for Excellence in Sculpture

From embroidering the earth’s mantle to embodying the earth’s core: a note to the spinner. While it is wedged often in discomfort, it, like us, is the product of stellar aspirations; one of a time long ago. I rest here with it, spinning the rabbit, colouring the iron, catching the density of this encounter.

Sophie Malvestuto, ‘Tangle composition’, 2024, copper, steel wool, magnets, hairpin lace wire, fabric.

Living and working in Naarm/Melbourne, Sophie Malvestuto’s multi-disciplinary practice is grounded in sculptural object making and installation. She creates works that explore the poetics of materials and expressions of encounters. Her practice is led by a deep curiosity for materials and their properties, allowing her to engage in a broad range of techniques and applications. The works are intimate and often precarious in nature, unifying the multiple dimensions of experience and emotion.
