Fragments of Identity: Exploring Identity, Migration, and Memory through Ceramics and Printmaking.
My Master’s project explores the intricate relationship between personal identity, migration, and memory through the mediums of printmaking, ceramics, and collage. Drawing inspiration from my journey as a female migrant to Australia, the work reflects the transformative process of adapting to a new culture while navigating evolving identities. By referencing ancient Iranian ceramics and using them as storytelling platforms, I create a dialogue between historical and contemporary narratives. Through the reproduction of traditional forms and the incorporation of personal knitted objects, panoramic photography, and casting techniques, I investigate the concept of indexicality to evoke fragments of memory and forge connections between personal and collective experiences.
This project also incorporates domestic crafts, archival research, and autoethnography, blending traditional artistic techniques with modern influences. My exploration of ancient ceramics, informed by the legacy of Iranian art and archaeology, is enhanced by personal artifacts and an extensive visual archive that fuels the creation of collages on ceramic surfaces. Through these varied forms of expression, my work aims to recontextualise cultural narratives, bridging past and present while inviting viewers to reflect on the complexities of identity and migration in a global context.
