My art practice employs performance-based video art to investigate the psychological tensions within Chinese-Australian immigrant subjectivity. Through an auto-ethnographic lens, it excavates the ideological fractures of being caught between Chinese nationalism and Australia’s multicultural assimilation, alongside the inner struggles of marginalisation and ‘down-skilling’ that impact many migrants.
Rejecting linear, closed narratives, I transform lived experience into a constellation of ambiguous, metaphorical, and emotionally charged performances. The artist’s body acts as a living archive, often extended or contextualised by found objects or sites that co-perform as signifiers of external reality. Situated within the legacies of performance art, this project also incorporates experimental new media strategies. These performances are documented and fractured within video temporality, layered with confessional narration and ambient soundscapes to create a multisensory chorus that mirrors the affective complexity of diasporic consciousness.
