Summary

The material language of identity is the focus of this artistic project. Spanning painting, sculpture, installation, and performance, this ouvre explores the intersections of skin and enviroment to build embodied connection in separated times.

The material language of identity is the catalyst of my artistic inquiry into embodied connection between people, animals, and environment. This body of work combines painting, performance, natural materials, and found objects to encourage empathy and embodiment beyond the self.

My paintings are composed of overlayed and intersecting bodies, exploring the figure as an expressive medium to rebuild communal and relational existence. My interest is in the experience of skin, the physical sensations it generates that are paradoxically unique and universal, and through this focus I hope to dissolve any societal boundaries we have placed between bodies. My art reflects on the fractures created by society and offers solutions through art, such as subversion, abstracting the body, and material exploration. I approach skin as an epidermal layer that holds humans, plants, and animals in relation, drawing on a universally experienced facet of life to reveal our part in the broader living fabric.

Sculpture and installation are mediums through which I disect bodily and environmental intersections, utilising found objects in combination with natural materials to juaxtapose the industrial with the environmental. With an interest in reimagining the non-human with bodily elements, I combine human hair with natural materials and industrial objects in order to question the status we bestow on things outside ourselves.

The medium of tattooing has become the foundation of my focus, as its quality of enscribing aspects of our life experiences onto our skin is a potent medium for exploring connection. Collaboration is married to tattooing in my practice, as the mere act of reciving and giving a tattoo is a form of deep intimacy, trust, and ultimately connection. Through performance I harness the symbology of tattooing and collaboration to explore themes of bodily relation, psychology, and elements of the mythical.

Embodied and relational experience is the heart of my art making,  explored through painting, installation, sculpture, and performance, and calling upon somaesthetics, material symbology, abstraction, and tactility to conjure viewers into my mimetical world where the body, objects, and the natural world are not separate, but are interdependent parts of a shared existence.
