MIND, BODY AND VEHICLE
My research engages with ideas relating to internet culture and all of the strange dark absurdities of being online. I am fascinated by the stark polarities and extremes of the online experience, the way in which violence and explicit content co-exists alongside family photo albums and funny cat videos. I am heavily influenced by Hito Steyerl’s idea of the “poor image”, the celebration of low-quality, widely circulated digital images; accidental screenshots, low-resolution memes, diagrams and pixilated portraits. These images are the ones we view most on a day to day basis yet they are often overlooked and possess a low fidelity in the media hierarchy. I am interested in rendering these pictures in oil paint, often with a photorealistic style, connecting traditional art-making sensibilities with contemporary image culture, separating myself from my practice in a sense in the name of reproduction. I want to come to terms with the fact that we live in a reality where the physical and digital realms are blurred, as most of us are engaging with social media and networked technologies all the time.
