A Perfect Failure
An installation of multiple works, exploring the themes of Empathy, Empowerment, Family, Social Justice and Housing (especially the failures of the private sector and government.) Through creating a large painting / drawing using hessian and plaster, I was able to investigate the forced failure of the materials to replicate a sense of fragility and vulnerability. Casting plaster forms, utilizing a negative space approach, I made plaques of absent (negative space) house forms and forced the casting process to fail, resulting in less than perfect representations. A rug with the text ‘A Perfect Failure’ sits within the installation, the only specific item to address the theme, though still abstract in its meaning.
Through this project I am also investigating the ‘affect’ of materials (smell of the hessian, negative space of the plaster plaques, spaciality of the installation) in relation to the ideas of safe and secure housing. I am searching for a representation of fragility through the materials (hessian, plaster, paper) and relating this to the idea that housing is a right for all, and the current standard of some buildings are failing our society.
Over the three years of this Undergraduate degree, I have developed a socially engaged and political / social justice centered arts practice, where I am inspired to reflect on issues that I feel passionate about. This has included works focused on; the individual and their voice, the ongoing femicide in Australia, the incarceration of young children, hostile architecture in our cities and the failure of accessibility to affordable and well-made housing for anyone in Australia. This choice of themes has arisen from personal experiences and interests, as well as issues identified from the observation of different spaces and places that I have experienced in travelling to and from the city for my studies. By moving outside of the area that I live in, I have been witness to many distinct social vignettes, which has increased my exposure to individual social issues.
