OPEN EYES AND CLOSED DOORS explores the intimate connections between place, memory and acceptance. The diptych provides a glimpse into my internal and private experiences of chronic illness and trauma, through the most vulnerable physical spaces I occupy, and the psychological states that occur through periods of change, growth and suffering. The works act as a bridge between the confinement of illness and the outside world, communicating an experience that is often too difficult or too confronting to put into words.
Jesse Chabrier-Pope is a Melbourne based artist living and working on Wurundjeri land. His work explores themes of trauma, intimacy and the human condition through painting and drawing. Jesse weaves narratives of growth, memory and change through an intimate lens, looking deeply at private interior and exterior spaces, and the figures the occupy them, whilst reflecting upon his lived experience of chronic illness and grief.
