THE TRACE OF THE TEAR is a sculptural neckpiece born from Lilian Fung’s own healing journey. Rooted in research on the crystallisation of dried human tears under a microscope, it gives form to what is often unseen — grief, memory, and release. Its lace-like structure echoes the delicate patterns of tears, descending toward a single teardrop that symbolises letting go. Through fire-colouring and patina, the surface traces an emotional spectrum, turning invisible sorrow into a visible monument of endurance and transformation.

THE LANGUAGE OF FRAGMENTS continues this exploration of healing through a heart divided into wearable brooches. Originally conceived as a single reassembled piece, the work evolved to let the fragments remain separate — reflecting the release of the need for wholeness. Each brooch holds a vessel for flowers, echoing Victorian tussie-mussies — vessels of unspoken emotions, where meanings bloomed through the language of flowers. Inserting flowers into the vessels becomes an act of care, transforming the gesture of adornment into a quiet ritual of empathy and connection. Whether worn or gathered on a heart-shaped stand, the work turns brokenness into a shared language of resilience and self-acceptance.

Lilian Fung is a Hong Kong-born, Melbourne-based jewellery artist whose practice transforms ornament into vessels of memory and emotion. Her work reinterprets historical aesthetics through a contemporary lens, exploring fragility, resilience, and post-traumatic growth through materials that embody healing and reflection.
