ECHOES ACROSS THE AEGEAN

My work explores the connection between my two homes, Crete Greece and Melbourne Australia. While backpacking in 2024, I fell in love with a potter from a village on the island of Crete. We are now married and expecting our first baby.
Since this time my artwork has explored bridging the gap between my two homes. I have made a series of hand painted ceramic vessels entitled  Echoes Across the Aegean.
Migration is a way to ensure safety and prosperity in a new country. In Greece, I have found a world of love and adventure, yet I ache for my family and friends and the native wildlife and scenery of Australian. When visiting Melbourne, I experience that same emotional nostalgia for Crete.
I explore these themes of longing and memory through observational illustration. Reminiscent of a children’s book, my narrative vessels may be held by our child one day to see the love story of their parents and the heartache of having to experience separation.
My painterly illustrations are created using ceramic stains directly onto a range of hand built clay vessels to achieve a watercolor like appearance on ceramics. A functional clear glaze is then applied.
