Summer Johnstone

Insight investigates the grounding qualities of the Australian atmosphere and landscape, focusing on the interconnectedness of land, sea, and sky within the Dandenong Ranges and along the Victorian coastline. Through a series of works developed from gathered organic materials, I explore the subtle rhythms and quiet harmonies of these environments. The repetition within my mark making reflects the fractal patterns found in nature inviting moments of stillness, contemplation, and meditation that mirror the cyclical patterns of the natural world.

My practice embraces simplicity and slowness, allowing space for reflection and an embodied connection to place. Each mark becomes both an act of observation and meditation, grounding my process through attentive engagement with material, environment and observation. In slowing down, I aim to express the meditative and restorative qualities of the Australian landscape, offering viewers a quiet space to pause, recharge, and reconnect with the calm presence found within nature’s repetition and restraint.
