Tate Maxwell is an artist working in the expanded field of drawing. In a recent departure from representational charcoal drawings, Maxwell has begun to explore spatial potentiality, quality, and re-traceable visual history through free standing and three-dimensional structures. His practice is held up by three pillars: Harmony, Physicality, and Preservation:
The pillar of Harmony is built of precise Imperial measurements, informed by architectural forms, Mid-century sculpture and design, and the widespread decline of Quality.
The pillar of Physicality is a triangular relationship between artwork, environment, and audience. Whilst not site specific, the work references the architecture of the building it lies within, and alters paths taken throughout the space.
The pillar of Preservation is seen in the generation of marks and smudges accumulated during the construction of each work. The process-residue is gained through the pursuit of precision, and a meticulous, repetitive, manual method; The space between the lines is filled with the visual evidence of labour.
