TRACING MEMORIES, for our daughters, is a project that reflects on the journey of immigrant Vietnamese women and their untold stories of hybridity and migration into Australia. The importance of highlighting these lived experiences serves as an ode to my own mother and her journey to Australia, and to honour that cultural narrative of migration. In my practice, I like to incorporate the realms of printmaking with other techniques that involve textiles or using digital media. I still use traditional forms of print, however, I like to introduce alternative methods to help build support behind my subject’s themes. Because my project explores the migration of Vietnamese women to Australia, it became a profound journey of self-discovery. Through uncovering their untold stories of resilience, labour, and adaptation, I began to understand the intergenerational experiences that have shaped my own identity. Their sacrifices and strength mirrored the quiet endurance within my family’s history, allowing me to connect deeply with my heritage. This project not only honours these women’s contributions but also becomes a personal reflection on belonging, memory, and what it means to carry cultural legacy through art. By sharing these revelations through my work, I hope to evoke empathy and understanding in my audience, encouraging them to feel a sense of connection not only to my personal narrative but also to the broader human experience of migration, belonging, and cultural identity.
