Abstract:
Lowbrow.au is a website which posts weekly writing dedicated to Melbourne’s contemporary arts scene. Created to address the exclusive and academic nature of traditional art criticism, Lowbrow uses a casual, humorous, and approachable tone designed to engage an audience of emerging artists, students, and the general public. The platform prioritises writing about artist-run initiatives (ARIs), independent galleries, and emerging creatives, creating an online space for diverse voices to be heard. The project combines conversational critique with grassroots arts coverage. Launched via a self-built Squarespace website, the project has steadily grown its online presence through social media and online engagement. Positive feedback from artists, galleries, and readers highlights a strong demand for inclusive, accessible arts writing in Melbourne. Future plans for Lowbrow include expanding the platform to feature guest writers and seeking funding to ensure the platform’s sustainability and growth.
