Bio Statement:

Vanessa Tang is a Naarm/Melbourne-based arts manager and artist. Formerly an educator, she is passionate about connecting art with the public and creating inclusive cultural experiences.
Since moving to Melbourne, Vanessa has become involved in the street dance community,
inspiring her interest in how urban spaces can support creativity and expression. Combining
her backgrounds in education and arts management, she aims to bridge the gap between
artists and audiences and help more people discover the beauty of diverse art forms.
Abstract:
Vanessa’s capstone project titled, Step Up in Space: A Street Dance Initiative, researches the possibility of transforming public space in Melbourne into a dance-friendly space that better
supports street dance as a cultural expression and art practice. It investigates what makes an ideal space for street dancing, how public art installations can enhance dancers’ experiences,
and what impact dancing in public spaces has on society. Using site observations and
interviews with local dancers in Melbourne, the research identifies the needs of street dancers when dancing in public urban spaces. The case studies show how other places in the Asia Pacific build spaces more welcoming for dance practice. Street dance in public spaces encourages self-expression, cultural exchange, and interpersonal connection. The aim of the
study is to propose a thoughtful urban design for a public area to transform an everyday space into an inclusive platform for street dancers and the wider public to perform and connect.
