PLANTS & PLAY DATES
Through this series of temporary installations, I utilise intuitive, experiential art making to explore themes of agency and communion. By engaging with living plants and multimedia, I inhabit new and unfamiliar spaces in an open and playful way, at times inviting others to participate. This is enacted by arranging and layering various media to create a site-specific installation as an immersive yet gentle space to inhabit. Through this process I practice being present within a world that can feel overwhelming.
Jo’s practice is process-driven, encompassing painting and experimental installation. Her works take form by approaching the creative process as a collaborative act between herself and the media, as well as an inquiry into art making as a facilitative process for experiences of connection and belonging. For Jo, the process of painting is a relational act: a means through which notions of agency (self-expression) and communion (receptivity) can be enacted and reiterated.
Jo was born in Port Fairy, Victoria and lives and works in Mulubinba/Newcastle, NSW. She completed a Bachelor of Arts (Creative Arts) at the University of Newcastle in 2008 and since graduating has exhibited her work in group and solo exhibitions in Newcastle, Melbourne and Sydney. She has work held in private collections within Australia and internationally, and was a finalist for painting in the 2013 Newcastle Emerging Art Prize.
