CNIDAGARIDEX [Mushroom Jellyfish].
This project brings into being an encyclopedic database of imagined ecology that introduces new, unusual lifeforms known as mushroom jellyfish. Inspired in part by the Pokémon game series’ creature directory, the Pokédex, and the blending together of diverse marine and mycelial ecologies, Mushroom Jellyfish is a contemporary example of eighteenth-century Japanese writing structure, the ‘encyclopedic mode’.
Each uniquely constructed amalgamation is introduced as an entry in the newly compiled CNIDAGARIDEX alongside information detailing their imagined ecology, influenced by of components of real-world ecology, natural technologies, and video game graphics and storytelling.
Presented in a pixel art stylisation achieved through the digital manipulation of collected images, Mushroom Jellyfish combines a range of techniques to demonstrate a merging of real and virtual worlds, and aims to incite wonder and curiosity for these bizarre new creatures.
