The flow of desires and obligations.

My Master’s project explores the multitude of layers concerning diaspora identity and socio-cultural hybridity through multimedia projection painting. Drawing influence from the shojo genre, I experiment with the blending of Chinese painting aesthetics with digital animation and 3D rendering. By navigating the mediums of traditional and digital I seek to transcend the boundaries between the traditional socio-cultural paradigms and contemporary cultures that shape my identity. In the search for individual agency and empowerment, my work subverts shojo and kawaii genres and thus challenges Confucian virtues and social pressures on femininity and sexuality. The project negotiates the tensions of Chinese heritage and cultural duality within the context of contemporary culture by seeking to reinvent and reinterpret painting styles as a form of rebellion and self-expression.
