Garment of the Soul
Rooted in my migration and separation from my motherland Iran to Australia, I seek to depict the emotional dissonance and suspended state of being between the two realms. Drawing inspiration from cultural symbolism and geographical landscapes, I employ painting practices and installation to create immersive spatial forms and utilising visual abstract to transform my feelings of longing and belonging into expanded painting.
Garment of the Soul is a mixed media expanded painting done with oil on canvas, acrylic on fabric and red sand, that explores one of the diasporic complexities. It captures the fleeting moment of emotional attachment to my motherland, Iran. It embodies state of liminality that arises from memories and attachment that span geographical and cultural distances.
Garment of the Soul Represents a diasporic being explored through a triadic modality drawn from Rumi’s poetry, based on the gnostic concept of human existence: “Body or Form,” in which I use Australian red sand and fabric to evoke a sense of corporeal presence in Australia; “Soul or Meaning,” the abstract oil painting on a triangle-shaped linen canvas, representing memories of Iranian historical architecture, such as blue tile works of the domes, symbolically preserved within the soul; and “Spirit or Unseen,” symbolised by the V-shaped cut on the background layer.
