ENCHANTED BY THE FEELING

Enchanted by the Feeling reimagines intimacy through soft sculpture, self-portrait photography, and immersive installation. Employing play, performance, and fluidity as queer methodologies, Kate seeks creative new perspectives on the experience. Through embodied practice, these strategies facilitate alternative experiences of time, space, and relationality, challenging the constraints of a Western heteronormative context. This project brings autobiographical reflections into conversation with the theory of affective intimacies, phenomenology, and queer methodologies, to cultivate an expanded and imaginative personal relationship with intimacy.

Kate’s discovery of their queerness as a 23-year-old has been a source of curiosity, grief, imagination, and desire, all of which are driving forces in their research. Enchanted by the Feeling comes from a deeply personal space but is tenderly met with the playful and loving sensibilities of their childhood.

Kate Marshall (b. 1997) is a Tasmanian born artist, now based in naarm (Melbourne), who creates across soft sculpture, photography, video, and installation. Their work abstractly explores autobiographical experiences of intimacy, queerness, desire, and vulnerability. Kate’s work uses colours and materials from their childhood home to navigate and nurture the relationship between their adult self and their childhood in which queerness wasn’t present. This project is a continuation of Kate’s interest in creating more meaningful and fluid relationships between past and present, dreams and reality, people and objects, expanding their understanding of being in the world through embodied and imaginative practice.
