PEACE AND LOVE AND BEAUTY AND FREEDOM AND…

Peace And Love And Beauty And Freedom And Love And Regret And’ was my debut solo show that ran for a month in October this year at MOM Gallery in Thornbury. The show was a collection of lasercut acrylic mirrored dolls, a meditation on desire, self-obsession, and what it means to be good in a beautiful dying world.

I’m thinking about… woman as doll, woman as object. To be held, owned, to look to as an image of perfection. I’m thinking about moments of forced introspection – actions, mistakes, regrets. I’m thinking about modernity as we always seem to sit at the edge of a new world, trying to imagine our shared future. I’m thinking about dreams and making them reality. I’m thinking about reality and escapism, the worlds that we build for ourselves that reject the one we live in. I’m thinking about the world we live in, our responsibility to it and the shame of not knowing what to do with it. I’m thinking about whether the answer is to look inward, or out. I’m thinking about virtues, of words that follow me and stick. Peace. Love. Beauty. Freedom. Trust. Patience. Words I live by, they all connect. I’m thinking about beauty and freedom. That on days I feel beautiful I feel happy, that hair is everything. I’m thinking about Retro Futurism, The Jetsons, Suzanne Valadon, Helen Chadwick, The Superflat, The Buddha. I’m thinking about mirrors, selfies, vanity, reflection. I’m thinking about what I want, I’m thinking about me.

LOVE AND REGRET IN A BEAUTIFUL DYING WORLD

‘Love And Regret In A Beautiful Dying World’ is the continuation of my solo show, continued world building through drawing, a return to pencil to paper after relying on machine. This series is a return to childhood, to creation for the sake of expelling built up energy. To make without thought, accessing a part deep inside that doesn’t care about being perceived or seen, that creates for no one but the self to figure out what that is and how I am situated in it.

Rupa Anurendra is an artist living in Naarm/Melbourne. Her practice is informed by a BA in Communication Design and has a current focus on lasercutting and colour pencil drawings. For work she is a tattoo artist.
