EGG AND SHELLS is a large-scale copperplate etching that captures an impression of the southern hemisphere night sky as seen from my suburb, densely populated with stars. I believe copperplate etching and lithography hold infinite, unforeseeable variables for experimentation. This work integrates the limitless possibilities of printmaking with the unknown expanse of the galaxy.
During my research, I discovered that numerous cultures across international societies share a similar mythical motif: the ‘cosmic egg’ as a cosmogony explaining the world’s beginning. This discovery propelled my practice toward research-based explorations in cultural astronomy, weaving these elements into celestial print imagery.
I am an Korean Australian artist with a painting background and drawing-based printmaking practice. Whilst my works often investigates re-imagined, ethereal galaxy through experimental printmaking and exploration of mediums, some delve into my upbringing and continuing experience of cultural minority as a Korean immigrant. A sense of detachment from reality is prevalent in my works, fabricated with my personal aloof vision of distant outer space.
