Hartley Snape

DECONSTRUCTION TODAY: OF COURSE I EAT THE APPLE AFTERWARDS – Hartley’s paintings explore multi-layered compositions and the study of form through traditional oil painting on canvas. His practice involves a process of visual experimentation grounded in painterly technique, resulting in works that invite contemplation and hint at suggestions.

An interplay between the foggy and the distinct runs throughout his work, creating compositions that are at once conceptual and sentimental spaces to get lost in. Curiosity and play drive his process, leading to structural improvisation and an embrace of idiosyncrasy as it emerges.

Snape’s recent investigations consider painting through the lens of poststructuralist thought, deconstruction, and semiotics. His work carries a cryptic quality, exploring rhythm, time, and complex conceptual and emotional states via the language of figuration.
