BUTTER FACE This practice-led research project examines the performative role of gender within contemporary heteronormative scripts using boudoir parody performance that combines papier-mâché, soundscape, costume, and movement. The research stems from my personal frustrations with modern dating—both online and face-to-face—and the psychological warfare it has unleashed on my identity as a woman. Methodologically shaped by hybridity and humour—particularly the mythical chimera—the project employs human-animal hybrids to explore the complexities of gender identity and its often-absurd manifestations. Humour and hybridity are therefore used to uncover deeper truths and to rethink my experience as a woman in the dating scene.

I’m constantly in disarray over matters that involve men. Whether it be dating, friendship or family. I find myself hopeless and frankly disappointed. A lot of these interactions lack humanity either immediately or eventually. Performance allows me to create a world that escapes gender imbalance. A world where hybrid creatures guard femininity and let it flourish. The underlying irony within my practice can clearly display the ridiculous nature and reality of being perceived by men. All in an effort to protect my psyche.
