A ROOM OF HER OWN presents a collection of oil paintings that investigate themes of femininity, identity, and self-presentation within contemporary youth culture and queer spaces. Drawing from her own staged photographic imagery, Ivy depicts intimate scenes such as portraits, nightstands, and personal surfaces, rendered in luminous layers of fluorescent colour. The works are adorned with sequins, glitter, and charms. This parallels the ways we decorate and adorn our bodies and extends the paintings into the realm of object. The use of pink and glitter function as acts of resistance against the cultural fear of colour and the feminine. She is also influenced by the self-expression found particularly within queer nightlife spaces. Places where performance, identity, and adornment become acts of visibility and celebration. Installed within a softly illuminated environment featuring a glowing dresser. The body of works reflect on the aesthetics of excess, the everyday rituals of getting ready, and the intimate spaces where we carefully craft our image. Ultimately, this project examines how self-presentation and femininity intertwine in social as well as private rituals.
Ivy is a contemporary artist living and creating in NaarmMelbourne who makes vivid oil paintings working with luminous washes. These handmade fluorescent oils are an important part of her process in which she creates the paint from pigment powder. Her paintings capture intimate moments drawn from her own staged photographs of herself and friends. In these photoshoots she plays with lighting and flash photography to create a dreamy atmosphere. Her practice embraces excess, and self-presentation, reclaiming colour and decoration as powerful affirmations of identity.
