IN MY ROOM.mp4 pays homage to the early 2000s aesthetics of the new age internet, encapsulating the mess, life, and joy held within my bedroom. The mixed installation, consisting of projections, short-form videos, and photographic prints, brings together the essence of my room in a dissected and obscure way. It is an organised chaos of things, overflowing with imagery and small discoveries, much like the process of rediscovering forgotten or discarded objects within my space.
By playing with the objects as if they were toys, I reconnect with a childlike sense of nostalgia and playfulness. Using lo-fi technology to record reinforces this aesthetic, creating visual language that feels familiar yet imperfect. The work is a window into my mind, merging the lowbrow art movement of the 1960s and 1970s with a generational twist. The subject matter connects to the present moment, featuring blind box figures, DS game cases, and even an artwork that was made during Year 12, which sat on my floor waiting to be repurposed or put on for show.
The installation is a digital and physical memory scape, that merges the boundaries between the personal and performative. Using fragments from my everyday environment, my work reflects the blurry boundaries between digital and physical spaces, how they mirror each other, and transform such a personal and private world into a shared experience of nostalgia and contemporary identity.
