“KINDS OF CONNECTIONS”
I’m Poppy Clarke and I’m a multidisciplinary figurative painter. This project is an exhibition about kinds of connections. It is a series of portraits on panels and canvas to remind and inspire a renewed sense of excitement and appreciation towards all kinds of relationships in one’s life.
My work is about honesty, I want to capture my subjects’ personality with paint, I want them to shine through the work to a point of transcendence where the painting is merely a medium and you see a moment, a passing special instance, not a still perfect and finished portrait. I am exploring two themes within my overarching ‘kinds of connections’ theme, romantic partnered connection and platonic connection. I want this project to be relatable to the broader community, I don’t want to limit ‘my audience’ to just people in relationships so I decided to investigate all kinds of connections so more people could connect to my work. I also didn’t want to limit myself to one kind of idea within a body of work. Including the platonic friendship dynamic in my project through painting friends allowed for an understanding of the way connecting can occur.
