OF STRANGE WEATHER
Born of the 1924 Manifesto of Surrealism, ‘Breton demanded that a work of surrealist art should be a window through which the viewer could look upon some inner landscape of the mind. His approach lent a new importance to dreams, fantasies and hallucinations’.
Of strange weather is a series inspired by surrealism and its interrogation of dreams and the subconscious. It follows a journey from a certain reality to a dreamscape where increasingly elements of the absurd begin to permeate through, blurring the line between the unconscious and the real. The scenes each depict different stages of lucidity, each with their own sense of reflection, narrative, and intention. From this gradual combination of the dreaming state with the waking state, the intention was to highlight a movement to a newfound reality.
The images utilise a blend of fashion-orientated portraiture, with the aim of pushing the boundaries of what contemporary images within this field can be. Instead, finding magic and strange beauty in the unexpected and the uncanny. Thus, they inspire a strong focus on the narrative, set design, expression, and the sculptural qualities of both the human form and styling.
