Sculpture Workshop Prize.
THE RABBITS is an assemblage of found materials transformed and altered, arranged to echo an imagined agricultural or domestic garden exterior landscape and at the same time an interior domestic setting, similar to a sitting room. As the viewer moves through the assembled scene, the sense of tension between these two environments expresses the inherent tension in the dichotomous historical Australian settler identity, pulled between the laidback bushranger mythos and the comforting and well-to-do identification with the trans-national British Colonial middle class.
I am a British-Australian settler born in Armidale NSW, on the land of the Anaiwan people. I live and work in Naarm/Melbourne. I have studied as an undergraduate in the fields of archaeology, philosophy and indigenous studies before completing a Diploma and Advanced Diploma of Visual Art at RMIT. I am currently in the final year of study for a Bachelor of Fine Art at RMIT specialising in Sculpture. My art practice takes the form of sculpture, painting and installation, with a focus on the intersection of Australian settler identity and history, gender and the domestic space. My practice is also informed by my familial history and their belief in their ethical responsibility to contribute to the decolonisation of Australian culture.
