My main area of interest is in contemporary still life painting. My works are observational, using traditional painting methods and working from life. The works often begin by moving, organising and arranging objects before building impromptu lighting structures, directing light and creating a scene which will be my source material. My subject matter includes contemporary objects that reference the still life genre of painting, and I have a particular interest in glass and mirrors, reflection and refraction. I use subtractive methodologies while making and through painting and drawing, reduce the works down to the simplest and most distilled iteration.
Although no longer a common way of working in contemporary art practice, I enjoy the introspective and self-contained nature of working from life and I aim to make works that are quiet, intimate, and contemplative.
