EVERY SOUL SHALL TASTE DEATH, THEN TO US WILL YOU BE RETURNED
Loss, anxiety, and the desire for peace in the face of these emotions are common responses when contemplating one’s own mortality. Our philosophical or theological ideas, as well as our upbringing and life experiences, shape our thoughts and feelings about death. My photographic work explores the ways in which my family and religious upbringing have helped me make peace with the concept of death. This project attempts to shed light on and relieve the tremendous mystery of death through photography and research. Like many before me, one day I shall leave this dunyā دُنْيا. What was once an uncertain prospect fraught with anxiety, now appears to me as an exploratory journey. I contemplate if this journey will be characterised by eternal sleep or if it will unfold into an otherworldly realm as promised in stories of my upbringing and religious studies.
