Regardless

《无 證 綻 放》

The work is set in a small town in northern China during the 1980s and 1990s— a period of
social transformation still deeply bound by tradition. Marriage was regarded as a symbol of
order and continuity, and any emotion that did not conform to this structure was deemed
unspeakable.
I recreated scenes of “traditional Chinese marriage” as visual symbols and placed two women
within them. Within the cracks of taboo, they choose to love and to imagine. Regardless does
not aim for a declarative stance. It is neither a critique of social systems nor a call for change,
but a quiet contemplation of existence itself. The work presents a kind of love that grows slowly,
silently, within a repressive environment.
“无證” (unacknowledged) implies the absence of social recognition, while “綻放” (to bloom)
signifies that life continues nonetheless. Its English title, Regardless, means “no matter what”
— a quiet attitude of persistence in the face of denial.
I hope viewers can feel, beyond the notion of taboo, the courage to love even under constraint.
Love does not need to be sanctioned to be real; it simply exists—quietly, resiliently, regardless.
