Narratives Of Legacy.
This series examines the evolving ways in which we view, document, and memorialise the historical figures who shaped our nation.
Our nation is one that has been built on the brutality of colonisation but enriched by the diverse cultures brought on by immigration, where its people continue to question the nature of its identity. Who really are Australians, how do we want to be perceived, and who do we really want to honour as the founders of our land? Today’s perspective on such questions is in a state of flux with no real agreement by the Australian public on what the correct point of view is, as such it underscores the irrelevance of idolising historical figures.
As we increasingly amplify diverse voices from various ethnicities, sexualities, and backgrounds, the idea of a singular, everlasting position on the narrative surrounding historical figures becomes increasing complex.
These historical figures have been constructed in stone and marble with a narrow and biased viewpoint. This project, however, seeks to dismantle this position, by combining each of the pieces from different angles and sources to create a singular view that considers different perspectives and as such incorporate the voices of those who were once marginalised.
