The inspiration for this project comes from my previous work, where I began to explore the relationship between light and shadow in urban settings. This project seeks to delve deeper into that exploration, focusing on the concept that ‘Shadows exist because light is present. Where there is light, shadows follow.’ Through this project, I aim to capture the delicate interplay between the city’s architecture and its inhabitants, focusing on the stories that unfold in the spaces where light reveals and shadows conceal.
In this project, the city is more than just a backdrop—it is a living, breathing entity, continuously shaped by the people who move through it. The presence of individuals within these urban spaces creates a dynamic interaction of light and shadow, a choreography that reflects the connection between human experience and the built environment. Each photograph will seek to capture these fleeting moments of intersection.
The central focus of this project is the relationship between light and shadow, and how they define space, set a mood, and evoke emotion. I will explore the ways in which shadows stretch and contract, merge and dissolve, as they interact with the city’s structures and the people who inhabit them. The images will range from the stark contrasts of sunlight cutting through to the soft, elongated shadows of twilight that evoke a sense of sadness.
Shadows in this project are not to be seen as dark or negative only; instead, they are a testament to the presence of light. They exist because of light, carrying within them a quiet beauty and truth. Rather than symbolising fear or negativity, shadows are an integral part of the world’s balance, adding depth, contrast, and meaning to the visual narrative. This project embraces the idea that shadows are not something to be feared but rather elements that express emotions.
Overall, this project is as much about evoking emotion as it is about creating a visual experience. Through the interplay of light and shadow, I aim to convey the complex emotions that define the human experience within the urban environment.
